Glossary (definition) of Ingredients used in our products:

It can often be confusing when checking what ingredients are in the products – particularly when listed with the INCI name so here we have tried to describe briefly to help give a little understanding.

  • Organic Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii) – a seed fat that comes from the shea tree(also known as the karite nut tree or Mangifolia Tree). The shea tree is found in East and West tropical Africa. The shea butter comes from two oily kernels within the shea tree seed. After the kernel is removed from the seed, it is ground into a powder and boiled in water. The butter then rises to the top of the water and becomes solid.
  • Organic Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter) – is a pale yellow or off-white fat known for its outstanding moisturizing and nourishing properties. It is an organic fat extracted from the cocoa bean and possesses a creamy texture and a delightful chocolate-like aroma.
  • Organic Golden Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed oil) – is sourced from the seed of the S. chinensis shrub typically done by cold mechanical pressing of the seeds, which are first cleaned, dehulled, and even cooked, a natural emulsifier (that prevents formulas from separating) and an emollient which locks in moisture.
  • Organic Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil) – is a plant oil extracted from the almond kernel of the almond tree.It has a light texture that is easily absorbed into the skin and can be used to gently dislodge debris from deep within skin pores and follicles.
  • Organic extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil) an edible oil that is made from the white lining, or kernel, of matured coconuts that has a high saturated fat content.

  • Other coconut derived ingredients include: Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Hydrogenated Coconut Acid, Coconut Alcohol, Butylene Glycol Cocoate, Caprylic/Capric/Coco Glycerides, Cocoglycerides, Coconut Oil Decyl Esters, Decyl Cocoate, Ethylhexyl Cocoate, Isodecyl Cocoate, Lauryl Cocoate, Methyl Cocoate, Octyldodecyl Cocoate, Pentaerythrityl Cocoate, Tridecyl Cocoate, Magnesium Cocoate, Potassium Cocoate, Sodium Cocoate, Ammonium Cocomonoglyceride Sulfate, Sodium Cocomonoglyceride Sulfate, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Potassium Hydrogenated Cocoate and Sodium Hydrogenated Cocoate, Coco-caprylate, dicaprylyl ether.
  • Vitamin E (Tocophero) – typically derived from vegetable oils such as sunflower seed oil and non-GMO soy beans used to reduce the frequency and severity of skin issues. It has protective and healing effects, hydrating the skin and reducing the effects of environmental damage. It is an old-school antioxidant that occurs naturally in the skin. You can also find it in foods like spinach, nuts, seeds, and sunflower oil.
  • Shea Butter Ethyl Esters – plant derived eco-friendly multifunctional shea-derived emollient ester. A purified reaction product manufactured using shea butter or shea oil with ethanol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst.(Esters are the condensation product)
  • Sorbitan Olivate/ Cetearyl Olivate – plant derived product made from combining ingredients such as fatty acids from Olive Oil and Sorbitol, Found in a number of natural beauty products. Is a water-in-oil emulsifier.
  • Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil – a natural cold pressed oil with emollient and moisturizing properties high in monounsaturated fatty acids.
  • Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado Oil) – extracted from the pulp of the avocado. Naturally high in antioxidants, moisturising fatty acids, minerals and essential vitamins such as A, E and D
  • Rosa Canina Fruit Oil (Rosehip oil) – a plant oil derived from the fruit of the dog rose (wild rose), grown mainly in Europe, NW Africa and W Asia. It moisturizes the skin, soothes, strengthens skins barrier and provides antioxidants inc Vit C Vit E and carotenoids. Popular for ageing and dehydrated skin.
  • Horse Chestnut (Aesculus Hippocastanum Seed Extract – powerful anti-inflammatory properties and may help relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna Fruit Extract – useful as antimicrobial an anti-inflammatory agent. It is also believed to lighten the skin tone. It improves microcirculation within the skin, soothes the inflammation and redness.
  • Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract – a natural humectant which helps to bind moisture to the skin. Can help to treat minor skin inflammation and is considered to be antimicrobial and antiseptic
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract – Aloe vera has been used for centuries for its health, beauty, skincare benefits. Studies show that it may be effective in reducing the appearance of psoriasis, dermatitis, burns and inflammation. Helps to cool the skin and replenish the skins moisture.
  • Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract – a natural oil extracted from marigold flowers (Calendula officinalis. Considered to be antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial helping with skin conditions and would healing
  • Citric Acid – a mild acid that can be found in fruit (citrus in particular) used to adjust the PH in cosmetics
  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate – a palm free fine white powder that’s derived from coconuts A mild and gentle surfactant   
  • Kaolin Clay – a soft clay that contains minerals which have cleansing and soothing effects on the skin
  • BTMS 25 – is an emulsifying wax derived from rapeseed oil and palm oil. The vegetable sources are certified non GM and are not irradiated
  • Stearic Acid – one of the most common saturated fatty acids found in nature and the food supply obtained by saponification using hot water then distilled. From many sources including cocoa butter, shea butter, palm and soy
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine or CAPB – derived from coconut oil and modified to make it a mild foaming agent and surfactant (detergent)
  • Benzyl Alcohol – used as a preservative to prevent product turning rancid, stop microorganisms and discolouration – naturally occurring in plants and trees and can be  manufactured/derived from fruit such as cranberries and apricots
  • Cetyl Palmitate – derived from coconuts of palm trees and vegetable sources which contain palmitic acid
  • Sorbitan Palmitate – produced by reacting the polyol, sorbitol, with a fatty acids (stearic acid, lauric acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid). Both sorbitol and the fatty acids are naturally occurring
  • Xanthan Gum – a natural vegetarian ingredient derived from corn, soy, or wheat. It is a mild thickener, emulsifier & stabiliser used in many products to enhance their consistency
  • Dehydroacetic Acid – used as a preservative – an organic compound acid with antimicrobial properties
  • Panthenol – derived from Vitamin B5. (Pantothenic acid)
  • Argan Oil – produced from the kernels of the argan tree.
  • Olive Oil – a natural oil extracted from olives.
  • Phytokeratin – Hydrolyzed wheat protein often used in hair care products
  • Hydrolyzed Silk  – derived from leftover cocoons made by silkworms often used in hair care products
  • E Wax – Olive – obtained from a process of hydrogenation by blending different fractions extracted from olive oil to produce a hard wax
  • Potassium Sorbate – a safe food grade preservative used to prevent microbiology contamination . It is categorised as a GRAS substance.ie Generally Recognised As Safe which have undergone many years of studies that have lead scientists to confidently say they are safe for human consumption
  • Sodium Benzoate – a sodium salt present in low levels in berries, apples, plums and several other natural foods recognised as GRAS and used as a preservative
  • Aqua  – water
  • Glycerin – a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. We use Vegetable glycerin only. It is a humectant, a type of moisturizing agent that pulls water into the outer layer of your skin from deeper levels of your skin and the air  
  • Cetearyl Alcohol – plant derived product made from two fatty alcohols (cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol) found in plants like coconut and palm oil. Used as an emulsifier to mix liquid and oil together
  • Glyceryl Stearate SE(self emulsifying) – naturally derived fatty acid obtained from vegetable fats and oils used as a thickener and emollient to improve texture and feel of skincare products.
  • Boisaccharide Gum – 1 a complex sugar (polysaccharide) typically obtained via fermentation. Used as a binder, emulsion stabiliser
  • Propandiol, Salix Alba – a bark extract used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent
  • Sclerotium Gum – a natural thickening and gelling agent. Obtained by fermentation of the filamentous fungus sclerotium rolfsii.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate – the salt form of the skin replenishing ingredient hyaluronic acid which is more readily absorbed into the skin. It helps skin to maintain water balance which is critical to its healthy appearance. It is considered a postbiotic meaning it can help nourish and maintain the skins microbiome.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate – commonly known as baking soda. Considered to have mild antiseptic with antibacterial qualities and has excellent exfoliant qualities. Often used as a binding agent or in natural deodorant for odour control
